Dust off your tools for Spring (and use them safely!)

As we start to see warmer and longer days, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and power tools will be dusted off and brought out of the garden shed.

As they've probably been in there for a few months, have a read of my top tips for doing the relevant safety checks before you get stuck in.

Working at height

You do not need to fall from a great height to be badly injured. Most people who get injured falling from ladders are working at less than 2m high.

There is lots of good advice available on working safely from ladders and stepladders – here are a few key points:

  • Do a pre-use check - is it in good working order, including the feet, rungs and frame and any locking devices.

  • The ground should be firm and level (think how slippery gravel can be) .

  • You are looking for a leaning angle of 1 in 4 – 1 unit out for every 4 up, and have a strong resting point for the upper part – not fragile guttering or a window.

  • Keep hands free for gripping the ladder by using tool belts, hooks etc, which also reduces the risks of dropping objects too.

  • Avoid overreaching, working off the very top rungs or side–on working.

  • Keep your belt buckle within the stiles and keep both feet on the same rung or step throughout the task.

  • Think about what is happening around you – children, pets, pedestrians, opening doors and windows can cause you a problem.

Electrical safety

Whether it is a brand new gadget or you are hauling equipment out of the back of the shed, make a visual check to ensure the wires / sockets are in good order.

  • Using a circuit breaker or RCD which will cut the power in event of cable severance.

  • Think about where the cables are going – are they creating a trip hazard or trailing in the pond – remember water and electricity are not a good mix! Battery powered tools are a lower risk option.

  • Use the right tools for the job, and keep tools sharp – they are safer and require less effort to use.

  • If using chemicals ensure you read and follow instructions, think about your safety for you, children and pets.

Look the part!

It is so tempting to make the most of sunny days, but think about sun safety too – use sunscreen, cover up and keep hydrated.

Depending what tasks are on your (realistically achievable) to do list - you might also need to consider footwear, gloves and googles / safety specs.

Follow these top tips .to make pottering in the garden a pleasure not a pain.
